Oil lamps & kerosene lamps

Flagship has a wide range of stylish oil lamps and kerosene lamps to choose from. The ordinary kerosene lamp or storm lamp is nowadays more and more often called an oil lamp because lamp oil is now almost always used instead of kerosene. Lamp oil is better for the environment because it is a cleaner fuel. Another advantage of lamp oil is that it does not soot the glass of your oil lamp in the same way as kerosene does. So it's best to use lamp oil for oil lamps to avoid sooting the glass. Never fill the lamp's tank with more than 3/4 of the oil, so that the oil does not overflow when it gets hot. Oil has the ability to expand when it gets hot. It is also important that the wick is straight and goes down to the oil in the tank. The wick is a perishable item that we recommend changing every year.

How to use your oil lamp

To refill your oil lamp, remove the glass and burner and then fill the container with oil. Put the burner and glass back on the lamp and leave it for half an hour before using it. Remember that the wick should only rise just above the edge of the burner and only have a small flame at the start otherwise the cold glass of the lamp may crack. The best way to extinguish the oil lamp is to simply blow out the flame. Then you keep the setting on wick and flame.

Handling of kerosene & oil lamps in point form

Handling instructions for oil lamps:

• We recommend clean lamp oils such as Statoil blue, Festival or equivalent.
• Remove glass & burner from the tank.
• Then fill max 3/4 parts of the container with oil. The oil expands when heated.
• Put the burner in place and wait for about 30 minutes.
• Adjust the wick so that it just sticks up over the edge.
• Light the wick & replace the glass.
• It is important to always have a small flame at the beginning otherwise the cold glass will crack.
• When the burner is hot, lower the flame to the appropriate brightness.
• Keep a distance of at least 50 cm between oil lamp & ceiling.
• If you burn too hard, lamps with a built-in ceiling will discolor.
• Extinguish the oil lamp by blowing out the flame. Then you keep the setting of the wick/flame.
• Replace the wick every year as it swells over time & can damage the wick lift.
• Avoid prolonged exposure to damp & salty environments as the paintwork can be damaged.
