To help us understand how close you look with a binoculars, they are often called n x m where n is the magnification and m is the diameter of the lens eg. 7X50. The magnification gives how close we see the object and the diameter of the lens gives how much light the binoculars can let in. Many of today's binoculars have autofocus, which means that you do not need to focus sharply at different distances. This is very practical on eg. boat when it rocks in the waves.
